Another recon "before".
So…I finished the giant dress recon, and took a picture with my clothing construction teacher’s phone…but unfortunately the email I sent the pic to myself with did not send. In the meantime, here are some ‘befores’ for a 70s-ish bridesmaid dress:
And while I’m on the topic of recons, here’s a picture of me having fun with my giant green dress recon!

Clothing Construction Take Home Project: 80s Prom...
So, we have a collection of donated prom dresses in the back of my school’s clothing construction class. I was assigned to reconstruct a size 28, dark green satin and lace prom dress from the 80s.
To give you an idea just how big that is, here is the dress compared to a dress I have that fits me (size 2) -
Yeah. That’s preeeeetty big.
I’ve been seeing cute little dresses...

Earth Day!
A local natural food store hosts an Earth Day celebration every year and it was this weekend. I went and it was a lot of fun, plus the weather was really nice.
The best part of it is, of course, the samples. I had lots of free samples. I had chocolate, various meat replacers, coconut milk based ice cream, gluten-free cookies, local olive oils, a mediterranean sample salad, organic apple juice,...

Purse Post!
I just finished making a slouchy purse on commission - it’s in a purple batik print, it’s very cool. I had posted on the fabric in a previous post, and now, here’s the finished product:
And since this is now a purse post, here are some other previous purses I’ve made:
A smaller, pinker version of the above purse
A kitty print bag. Below is a close-up of the...

Mon Frere
I have recently discovered a band called Mon Frere - they’re a girl group, kind of punk rock type music. Really good though. Here’s the link where you can listen to some of their stuff.

Here are my latest Burdastyle faves!
blukimono’s Citrus Fruit Bustier:
One of the best t-shirt recons I’ve ever seen by Corvus.
A nice tweed work jacket - very clean construction if I do say so myself - by SUNintheCLOUDS:

And last but not least, Lucia Rutondu’s Peach Princess dress -

Apron Time!
I am going to be making an apron for my Spanish teacher! She wants a retro-style full apron, kind of like this one, and I am pretty excited to make it.
Anyway, I haven’t been posting as much as I’d like to! I’ve been very busy and in addition, relatively minor family illness has taken up time in hospital visits. (Don’t worry, he’s fine!)
AAAAAND….that’s...

Ballroom Dance Dress inspirations
So, I am definitely, without a doubt, going to be making myself a nice ballroom costume - I already have a swing dance dress, so now it’s time for a sparkly, flashy, and skimpy Latin dance dress. I saw a few at the competition this week and I was envious.
Here are several examples that I liked. I think I’ll make a sketch of what I want and post it.
I’ll let you know...

Some sewing stuff.
I am going to be making the Danielle Dress in Clothing Construction during the next few weeks. I am going to be making it out of an old flowery bedsheet - which is brighter white in real life. I am making the sleeveless version of Danielle, and possibly with an a-line instead of box pleated skirt.
Also, I have a photo of 4 of the 7 dresses I made for my ballroom dance team. Aren’t they...

Ballroom Dance competition
Saturday I went to a ballroom dance competition and it was a good time. My partner was quite nervous but we did well.
Some pictures. The action pictures are unfortunately rather blurry.
We didn’t place but that’s okay…it was our first competition. Maybe next time. Unfortunately I need to get a new partner for next year, because my partner is going to college!

Finally....the Fashion District!
My trip to the fashion district was great! It was my second time being there.
First, of course, we went to the fashion district kiosk and took pictures with the giant sewing man statue.
We saw a GIANT INFLATABLE RAT and I had to take a picture. Although now that I think about it, I may recall a giant rat last time I was there as well.
We went to Mood, where I, of course, bought a load of...

School Spirit Week
Pre-Script: This post was written before spirit week but so as not to give away any of my surprise costumes I have delayed its posting.
So…. my school is having Spirit Week not next week (spring break) but the week after! I am usually not big on school spirit AT ALL but the theme days this year are sooooo fun. Check it:
1. Monday: Color Day. Okay so this one’s not that cool, but...

BUSY!
OMG I am so busy this week, like you wouldn’t believe! So for your reading pleasure, here is the link to the interview my friend Kasia gave me!
OFF THE CUFF - Seamster, er I mean Seamstress!
Isn’t that cool?
I got some nice photos of my 50s outfit for Decades Day at school, which will be posted later on.
Oh, I also started working at a local bakery, which I think I am going to...

The Pink Spiders
I am loving the Pink Spiders these days! They’re kind of British Invasion (except that they’re Tenessean) and rock. Good stuff!
This one is really good - it’s called “Busy Signals”.
And here’s Modern Swinger, off their older album. I feel like their older tracks have a more “raw” kinda tone to them. But the new album’s good too! The...

Not going as planned.
Well, today the plans changed. I didn’t end up doing a shoot of the sundress like I’d planned, unfortunately. So, instead, I am going to promote my friend’s new fashion blog!
Kasia, in my opinion, knows what she’s talking about. She has great style. Plus she speaks fluent Polish, a trait I long to have.
Her blog is called Off The Cuff and though it only has a few posts so...

Me covering several topics
So, I am currently working on somewhat eleborate costumes for Spirit Week at my school. The days are:
Monday - color day (my class wears orange)
Tuesday - Decades Day. I am a fan. I LOVE vintage. I am thinking I’ll do 50s. but NO poodle skirts!! GAAAHHHH!
Wednesday: College Day (wear a college sweatshirt)
Thursday: Superhero/Villains day! I made a great costume for this - but it’s...

Mind = numb
My mind is too exhausted from standardized testing to actually write anything today…so instead here is a photo from Burdastyle user Sophie11 of her cute little baby romper:

My current to-sew list.
Some of these things I’ve already written about, but it’s about time for a re-cap.
1. This dress -
I am thinking of making it in a yellow/pink combo; either that or a light purple/sage green combo. I may ditch the underskirt, instead I’ll use trim (to make it less formal so I can wear it more places). I think I’ll use Burdastyle’s Afternoon Tea Top pattern -...

Circle skirt photo shoot!
Remember the cute circle skirt I made? Well my friend Kathryn has agreed to model it for me in the upcoming fashion show at school, so we took some nice outdoor shots of her in it.
I like how the first photo has a vintagey type feel. Too bad the car is so modern-looking. Ah, well, you can’t have everything (and by everything I mean an awesome hot rod).
And this, of course, is me acting...

Weather
AHHHH this weather is fantastic! It’s about 80 degrees and sunny right now. I am going to have a friend over to paddleboat on my lake…again, it is just SO nice out!
I am also in the middle of a MONSTER project - sewing 8 dresses for ballroom dance by the end of next week. So i have been working on that and not much else.
I am going to be wearing the navy circle skirt I posted earlier...

Modcloth picks!
When I am in need of sewing inspiration, Modcloth is the site I look to. Here are some great picks from the site:
Iona Dress
Free as a Bird Blouse
Frock of Love Dress
So basically…the top dress is by Betsy Johnson and I love it but I am not going to reproduce it because I already have a ridiculous number of formal dresses and no where to wear them!
The top however is gorgeous....

Look! It's an actual Things-I've-Sewn post!
First off, we have a lovely batch of baby things which I sent to my baby twin cousins when they were born two months ago:
Clockwise from left: two flannel burp cloths, a stuffed animal toy, checked pants, two pairs of booties (one for each twin), and a jumper. Next up, an adorable little circle skirt.
This is a closeup of the tiny stripes. Adorable, no? Now, a bathing suit I made from...

Sailor Dress
Finally! A photo of my sailor dress. Unfortunately when I moved the file to my computer I was slightly disappointed in the lighting - you know how it is when you take photos around 4 or 5, the sun is in a bad position and makes everything light colored blend together. So hopefully I’ll get more pictures but in the meantime, here it is.
I made it using the Coffee Date Dress pattern from...

Sunsuits
Tell me these sunsuits aren’t the cutest things ever.
I wish I could wear a sunsuit with the confidence necessary. Cute, cute, cute. Also a big trend in the 40s - since fabric was on ration, and sunsuits required less than the usual amount of fabric, they became prevalent. Plus they make nice beachwear.
